When the rising cost of living and a desire for a more affordable and artist-friendly environment pushed Los Angeles-based artist Taylor Barnes to reconsider her life plans, relocating to the serene surroundings near the French Pyrenees wasn't initially part of her agenda. However, as she explored alternatives, she found herself drawn to the picturesque village of Saissac in southern France, captivated by its breathtaking natural beauty and reminiscent coastal California vibe. Recognizing the potential of this remote location as an ideal setting for her artist residency programs, Barnes embarked on a journey to establish her creative haven away from the bustling urban landscape of the United States.

Navigating the complexities of relocating to another country posed its challenges, but Barnes enlisted the help of a consultant to streamline the process, ensuring a smoother transition. In 2019, she acquired an abandoned crawfish restaurant and transformed it into 3.1 Art Sassaic, a vibrant hub for artists seeking inspiration and collaboration. The meticulously renovated space offers visiting artists a retreat-like atmosphere, complete with private living quarters, a spacious studio overlooking the scenic gorge of the Vernassonne river, and communal areas designed to foster creativity and camaraderie.

Despite the rigorous regulations imposed by French heritage authorities during the restoration process, Barnes successfully preserved the historic charm of the building while infusing it with modern amenities conducive to artistic endeavors. The medieval ambiance of Saissac, characterized by its cobblestone streets, ancient stone walls, and rustic lavoir, serves as a constant wellspring of inspiration for visiting artists, transporting them to a bygone era steeped in timeless beauty.

Embracing the slower-paced lifestyle of her new home, Barnes finds solace in the simplicity of everyday rituals, from leisurely morning walks in the forest with her dog to savoring espresso at the local épicerie and indulging in delectable meals at quaint village eateries. Summers bring vibrant cultural events and communal gatherings, fostering a sense of belonging and camaraderie among residents and expatriates alike.

While adjusting to life in a tight-knit community and navigating the nuances of French language and culture present their share of challenges, Barnes finds comfort in the warmth and solidarity of her newfound village family. As she continues to immerse herself in the vibrant tapestry of village life, Barnes cherishes the sense of belonging and support that comes from building meaningful connections within her community.

Reflecting on her decision to relocate, Barnes appreciates the quality of life and sense of security afforded by France's universal healthcare system, contrasting it with the isolating reality of aging in the US. With each passing day, she finds herself more deeply rooted in the fabric of village life, grateful for the bonds of friendship and the sense of purpose that define her new chapter in Saissac. As she continues to nurture her creative pursuits and cultivate a sense of community, Barnes embodies the timeless adage that home is not just a place but a feeling of belonging and connection forged through shared experiences and mutual support.
