Taiwan, US Discuss Semiconductor Ties and Supply Chain Security at APEC

At the APEC Summit in Gyeongju, South Korea, Taiwan’s representative Lin Hsin-i met with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to discuss strengthening supply chain resilience and deepening cooperation in semiconductor technology — a sector central to both economies.

During the 40-minute meeting on November 1, Lin shared insights into how Taiwan built its globally renowned chip industry, which remains a vital component of US supply networks. Bessent reportedly expressed strong interest in understanding the island’s semiconductor evolution and its pivotal role in global technology supply chains.

Beyond technology, the discussion also touched on trade barriers. Taiwan’s exports to the United States, excluding semiconductors, currently face a 20% tariff. Taipei has been negotiating with Washington to ease these duties, hoping to boost competitiveness and foster stronger economic ties.

While the United States does not maintain official diplomatic relations with Taiwan, it continues to be one of the island’s most significant international partners and defense supporters. Their cooperation on high-tech sectors reflects shared interests in maintaining stable and secure global production networks amid growing geopolitical tension.

The APEC forum remains one of the few international platforms where Taiwan can engage directly with major economies. Though Lin did not interact with Chinese President Xi Jinping during the summit, his participation highlighted Taiwan’s ongoing efforts to assert its presence on the global economic stage.

China is set to host the next APEC Summit in 2026 in Shenzhen, and Taiwan officials have indicated they are working to ensure that future meetings proceed smoothly and safely for all participants, despite ongoing political sensitivities.
