Hollywood actress Sydney Sweeney has taken on one of her most physically and emotionally demanding roles yet, transforming into former professional boxer Christy Martin for the upcoming biopic Christy. The film, directed and co-written by David Michod, chronicles two decades of Martin’s life, both inside the ring and beyond.

Christy Martin, now 57, rose to prominence in the 1990s as one of the most successful female boxers of her era. Known for her aggressive style and powerful punches, she became the first woman to sign with legendary promoter Don King and competed professionally from 1989 to 2012. The biopic not only highlights her athletic achievements but also delves into her personal life, particularly her turbulent relationship with coach-turned-husband Jim Martin, portrayed by Ben Foster, which had profound consequences on her career and personal well-being.

Sweeney spent three months rigorously preparing for the role, working with a boxing coach, nutritionist, and weight trainer. She gained 35 pounds (around 16 kg) to embody Martin’s strength and physique. “It was definitely a very intense physical transformation. But I felt so strong,” Sweeney shared. The actress also experienced the raw realism of the sport on set, enduring a concussion and, in one scene, potentially breaking someone else’s nose during fight sequences.

The movie emphasizes more than just boxing. “We set out to make a film that’s about many things, not just boxing,” said co-writer Mirrah Foulkes. It touches on themes of domestic violence and identity, showcasing the complex dynamics of Martin’s relationship with her husband and the challenges of coercive-control relationships.

Martin herself was closely involved in the production, frequently visiting the set to ensure authenticity. She also founded Christy’s Champs, a non-profit organization supporting victims of family abuse, underlining the real-world impact of her story. “Honestly, it’s a really heavy weight to carry,” Sweeney admitted at the London Film Festival premiere. “I feel the importance of her story and what it means to other people.”

Christy is set to begin its global cinematic release on November 7, promising a gripping and heartfelt look at the life of a trailblazing athlete who fought battles both inside and outside the ring.
