The anticipation builds as the draw for the inaugural 48-team World Cup unfolds in Washington, D.C., where former US President Donald Trump is set to draw significant attention.

Spanning from June 11 to July 19, this North American tournament will be the largest in World Cup history, introducing 16 additional teams compared to the previous Qatar 2022 event.

Hosted at the Kennedy Center along the Potomac, this event promises a dazzling lineup. Trump, newly appointed chairman of the Kennedy Center, is expected to be honored with the inaugural FIFA Peace Prize for his efforts in uniting communities, as noted by FIFA president Gianni Infantino.

The night will be co-hosted by renowned supermodel Heidi Klum and actor-comedian Kevin Hart, featuring thrilling performances from Village People, Andrea Bocelli, and Robbie Williams. Icons like Tom Brady, Wayne Gretzky, and Shaquille O’Neal will assist in the draw process.

Positioning the World Cup as a highlight of his second presidency coinciding with the United States’ 250th anniversary, Trump has hinted at moving matches from Democrat-controlled cities under potentially unsafe conditions.

Notable attendees include Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, with the tournament scheduled to utilize 11 venues in the USA, three in Mexico, and two in Canada.

Initially, Iran threatened a boycott over visa issues affecting their delegation but later confirmed attendance, including their head coach Amir Ghalenoei.

Argentina, the defending champions, will be top seeds along with Spain, Brazil, France, Germany, England, Portugal, the Netherlands, and Belgium, while the three host nations complete the first seed pot. The expanded format allows for debut qualifiers like Cape Verde, Jordan, and Curacao.

Criticism exists regarding the 48-team format, with former FIFA president Sepp Blatter calling it a “monster.” Teams will be divided into 12 groups of four, with the top two from each group and the eight best third-placed teams progressing to the round of 32. Notably, the four highest-ranked teams—Spain, Argentina, France, and England—cannot clash until the semi-finals.

With six spots still pending, playoffs could affect the matchups of lower-seeded teams, while Italy, 2006 World Cup victors, remain on the radar after missing the last two tournaments.

Mexico City’s Azteca Stadium will host the opening match, culminating in the final at MetLife Stadium close to New York City. Further details on match schedules and venues will be released the day following the draw.
