A former Miss South Africa contestant who faced significant backlash over her nationality has been crowned Miss Universe Nigeria, marking a dramatic turn in her recent journey. Chidimma Adetshina, a 23-year-old with a Nigerian father and South African roots, withdrew from the Miss South Africa competition after facing intense xenophobic attacks and safety concerns.

The controversy began when Adetshina's Nigerian heritage sparked a fierce backlash and allegations about her mother's possible use of another person's identity. Despite these challenges, she remained hopeful and expressed her excitement about her new role. "This is something that I've always wanted, and I'm really glad that I have a second shot at achieving it," Adetshina said.
The Nigerian pageant organizers invited her to participate, recognizing the opportunity to represent Nigeria internationally despite her long absence from the country.
First runner-up Paula Ezendu called for an end to xenophobia and tribalism, highlighting the need for unity among people. "We all need to stop with the xenophobia... with the tribalism," Ezendu stated. "We're all one family. We're all human beings."
Adetshina has reiterated her appreciation for South Africa and expressed gratitude for the support she has received. She will go on to represent Nigeria at the Miss Universe competition in November.
