In recent years, astronomers have postulated the existence of a ninth celestial body known as "Planet Nine," potentially located in the distant corners of our cosmic neighborhood. This speculative planet, sometimes referred to as Planet X, is believed to be a gas or ice giant situated billions of miles away from the inner planets.
For nearly a decade, astronomers have diligently searched the outer solar system for clues of Planet Nine's presence. Now, their efforts are poised to receive a significant boost from the Vera C Rubin Observatory in Chile, slated to open in 2025. Equipped with cutting-edge technology, this observatory aims to revolutionize sky surveys and could potentially lead to the long-awaited discovery of Planet Nine within the next few years, as experts have told Live Science.
Mike Brown, an astronomer who initially proposed the Planet Nine hypothesis, anticipates that the observatory's advanced capabilities will enhance the search, possibly yielding results within the next two years. The observatory boasts an $800 million camera designed to capture detailed images of the cosmos, conducting comprehensive sky scans every three days.

According to NASA, Planet Nine is believed to share similarities in composition with Neptune but could possess a mass up to ten times that of Earth. It follows an eccentric orbit far beyond Pluto, taking between 10,000 to 20,000 Earth years to complete a single orbit around the sun.
Jim Green, director of NASA's Planetary Science Division, acknowledges the excitement surrounding the prospect of discovering a new planet but emphasizes that it's premature to definitively confirm the existence of Planet Nine based on current data. He underscores that ongoing observations and analysis will determine whether this hypothetical planet truly exists.
The solar system currently officially recognizes eight planets—Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune—following Pluto's reclassification as a dwarf planet in 2006. As astronomers await further data from the Vera C Rubin Observatory, the quest for Planet Nine continues to captivate the scientific community with the potential to expand our understanding of the outer solar system.
