DP World Egypt recently celebrated a remarkable week at Ain Sokhna Port with a series of important developments that highlight the port’s growing role in Egypt’s economy. From energy and industry to tourism, three major ship arrivals showed how Sokhna Port is becoming a key hub for global trade, national energy support, and cruise tourism.
One of the major highlights was the arrival of the Energos Eskimo, a special floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) operated by New Fortress Energy. The ship docked at Sokhna Port for advanced technical upgrades, including modifications to its high-pressure gas system. Once ready, it will head to SUMED Port, where it will inject natural gas into Egypt’s national grid. This step not only supports Egypt’s energy needs but also shows that Sokhna Port can handle highly technical and global-scale operations with ease.
In the same week, the port received Egypt’s largest-ever iron ore shipment. A massive cargo ship named Berge Kuju arrived from Brazil carrying over 180,000 tonnes of iron ore for Ezz Steel. The ship, which is 300 meters long, was smoothly and efficiently unloaded using Sokhna’s deep berths and modern equipment. This successful delivery is part of a long-term agreement and supports over 6 million tonnes of iron ore passing through the port each year. It clearly positions Sokhna as a major gateway for industrial imports and proves that the port can manage large-scale operations with professionalism and speed.
The third achievement came from the world of tourism. The Aroya cruise ship made its second scheduled visit under an agreement with Cruise Saudi, bringing with it 2,300 passengers. The arrival and customs process were handled quickly and smoothly, further boosting Sokhna Port’s reputation as a rising cruise tourism hub in the region. The arrival of international cruise passengers brings life to nearby areas and helps local businesses such as hotels, restaurants, transport companies, and shops.
Mohammad Shihab, CEO of DP World Egypt, expressed pride in how the team handled different types of vessels in one week — from gas carriers and cargo ships to a cruise liner. He said that Sokhna Port’s strong location and modern facilities are helping connect Egypt with Asia, North and East Africa, and global markets. He added that DP World’s ongoing investments, including the nearly complete Sokhna Logistics Park worth $80 million, will help further strengthen Egypt’s position in global logistics and trade.
This historic week stands as a strong example of how Sokhna Port is becoming more than just a seaport — it is now a powerful engine driving Egypt’s energy security, industrial strength, and tourism potential. As DP World Egypt continues to invest and grow, Ain Sokhna is truly emerging as Egypt’s trusted gateway to the world.
