Tokyo, Japan – Tropical Storm Shanshan has unleashed a deluge of rain across much of Japan, causing significant disruption in the south and heavy rainfall around Tokyo. The storm, which made landfall on the southern island of Kyushu early Thursday as a powerful typhoon, has since weakened but remains nearly stationary, exacerbating the impact of its torrential rains.

By Friday morning, Shanshan was lingering off the northeastern coast of Kyushu. Its slow movement has resulted in prolonged periods of intense rainfall, increasing the risk of flooding and landslides. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) reported that Shanshan is advancing eastward at a speed of just 10 kilometers per hour (6 mph) with winds reaching 72 kilometers per hour (44 mph).

In Kanagawa prefecture, west of Tokyo, floodwaters have surged, inundating roads and creating traffic disruptions. Streets were submerged, with some vehicles stranded and roads blocked. Hiratsuka town saw cars partially submerged in floodwater, while pedestrians navigated through thigh-deep water. The Meguro River in Tokyo, a popular spot during cherry blossom season, has overflowed, with muddy waters visibly higher than normal.

The JMA forecasts that Shanshan will bring up to 30 centimeters (11 inches) of rain to Shikoku and central Japan, and up to 15 centimeters (6 inches) to Tokyo and surrounding areas by noon on Saturday. The ongoing rain poses significant risks, including potential landslides and further flooding.

The storm has disrupted transportation extensively, with hundreds of domestic flights canceled and Shinkansen bullet trains between Tokyo and Osaka suspended. Postal and delivery services in southwestern Japan, particularly in Kyushu and Shikoku, have been largely suspended, and many businesses, including major automakers like Toyota and Mazda, have closed their factories in the affected regions.

The hardest-hit areas in Kyushu, including Miyazaki and Kagoshima prefectures, have reported about 80 injuries, with two people still missing. Prior to landfall, Shanshan triggered a landslide that claimed three lives.

Authorities and emergency services continue to monitor the situation closely, providing updates and warnings as the storm progresses.
