SIG & NXW unite to launch algae protein in aseptic packs

Global packaging leader SIG and biotech innovator Nutrition from Water (NXW) have announced a strategic partnership aimed at revolutionizing nutrition accessibility through algae-based protein beverages packed in advanced aseptic formats. The collaboration seeks to bridge the nutrition gap in fast-growing economies by providing affordable, protein-rich, and shelf-stable products for communities that need them the most.

The partnership was born at MISTA, a global food innovation platform in San Francisco that brings together industry pioneers in food, ingredients, and technology. With the world population projected to reach 10 billion by 2050, the joint initiative emphasizes the urgent need for sustainable nutrition that supports both people and the planet.

As a first step, SIG and NXW will unveil a prototype product at Gulfood Manufacturing 2025 (November 4–6, Dubai World Trade Center). Visitors at SIG’s Booth C4-4, Hall 4, will experience an innovative yogurt alternative crafted from fermented coconut milk blended with 4% NXW microalgae protein. This new formulation represents a breakthrough in delivering nutrient-dense, plant-based beverages that support global health initiatives.

The partnership targets nutrient-deficient and underserved regions, combining NXW’s expertise in microalgae-derived proteins with SIG’s aseptic carton and pouch technology. These joint solutions will offer versatile positioning—from affordable nutrition for low-income consumers to premium, protein-enriched beverages.

NXW’s proprietary bioprocessing technology transforms microalgae strains into high-performing, digestible, and non-GMO ingredients, marketed under its Marine Whey™ range. Rich in protein and fiber, these ingredients can complement or replace both animal and plant-based proteins, enabling food producers to diversify ingredient sources and promote sustainable nutrition.
