Puttalam, Sri Lanka – His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah and Chairman of the Sharjah Media Council, visited Al Rahma Women’s Village in Sri Lanka’s Puttalam region, where he inaugurated 40 new homes for widowed women and their families.
The initiative, supported by Sharjah Charity International, reflects Sharjah’s humanitarian vision to provide safe shelter, healthcare, education, and employment opportunities to vulnerable communities abroad. Each new house includes two bedrooms, a living room, bathroom, and water tank, offering widows and orphans stability and dignity.
During the visit, Sheikh Sultan toured the village facilities, including the clothing exhibition where women produce garments for local sale and export, and the sewing training rooms that equip them with tailoring and fabric-cutting skills. These programmes help women generate income and achieve financial independence.

The Deputy Ruler also visited the village medical centre, which provides free healthcare through an examination room, triage unit, and pharmacy. He met children at the village park and reviewed educational services offered in classrooms, aimed at nurturing orphans’ academic and personal growth.
Sheikh Sultan emphasised the importance of education and empowerment, noting that knowledge equips orphans to become active members of society. He concluded the tour at the two-storey village mosque, which serves residents and neighbouring communities.
Sheikh Saqr bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Chairman of Sharjah Charity International, expressed gratitude to His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, for his continuous support of humanitarian projects. He highlighted Sharjah’s initiatives in Sri Lanka, including the foundation of Al Reeh Al Mursala Village, the launch of a mobile medical clinic, and long-term community development projects.
Since 2012, Sharjah Charity International has established six villages in Sri Lanka, comprising 195 houses, one school, two Qur’an memorisation centres, three medical health centres, and three artesian wells, benefitting over 10,000 people.
The Deputy Ruler was accompanied by Sheikh Saqr bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Chairman of Sharjah Charity International; Khalid Nasser Al Amri, UAE Ambassador to Sri Lanka; Mohammed Hassan Khalaf, Director-General of Sharjah Broadcasting Authority; Tariq Saeed Allay, Director-General of Sharjah Government Media Bureau; Hassan Yaqoub Al Mansouri, Secretary-General of Sharjah Media Council; as well as senior officials and representatives of Sri Lankan charitable organisations.
Sharjah’s sustained humanitarian efforts continue to improve lives in Sri Lanka, with a focus on stability, family development, and long-term community empowerment.
