BMW recalls 331,000 cars worldwide over fire risk

BMW AG is recalling more than 331,000 vehicles worldwide after identifying a starter motor defect that could lead to engine fires, the German carmaker confirmed.

The recall affects a wide range of models manufactured between 2015 and 2021. According to reports, water can enter the starter motor, causing corrosion that may trigger a short circuit. This can result in a fire risk whether the vehicle is parked or on the road.

Scope of Recall

The recall covers 195,000 vehicles in the United States and 136,000 in Germany, with global totals still undisclosed. It also includes around 1,469 Toyota Supra models built by BMW.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has urged owners to park their vehicles outdoors and away from buildings until repairs are completed. BMW said it will provide repairs free of charge, including starter motor replacements and, in some cases, battery replacements. Interim notices will begin mailing to owners on November 14, followed by detailed letters when parts become available.

Past Incidents

BMW has faced fire-related recalls before. In 2018, South Korea fined the automaker $10 million after 50 vehicles caught fire in one year. Authorities also criticized BMW for delays in recalling 172,000 cars in that case.

Business Impact

This latest recall comes as BMW invests heavily in its Neue Klasse electric vehicle lineup to compete with Chinese automakers like BYD. Last year, the company recalled 1.5 million vehicles over brake issues, a move that impacted earnings and prompted a profit warning.

BMW is betting on new EV software, high-performance computing, and extended battery range to regain momentum in the Chinese and European markets.
