Serbia Arrests 11 Over Anti-Muslim, Anti-Jewish Attacks Abroad

Belgrade — Serbian authorities have arrested 11 individuals suspected of carrying out a series of anti-Muslim and anti-Jewish attacks in Paris and Berlin earlier this year. According to the Serbian Interior Ministry, the suspects, all Serbian nationals, allegedly placed pig heads outside at least nine mosques in and around Paris and targeted Jewish sites with acts of vandalism.

The investigation revealed that the suspects threw green paint on the Holocaust Museum, several synagogues, and a Jewish restaurant in Paris. In Berlin, concrete “skeletons” were found placed in front of the Brandenburg Gate, raising concerns about coordinated attempts to incite fear and tension across Europe.

The Serbian Interior Ministry stated that the group received training in Serbia from a suspect identified only by the initials M.G., who is now at large. Authorities believe this training was conducted under the direction of a foreign intelligence service, though the ministry did not specify the nationality of the agency involved.

“Their goal was also to spread ideas that advocate and incite hatred, discrimination, and violence based on differences in religion and ethnicity,” the ministry said in its statement.

French authorities, who investigated the incidents, reported that the perpetrators were foreign nationals who left the country immediately after committing the attacks. France, which has Europe’s largest Muslim population, considers such acts particularly provocative, given that pork is forbidden in Islam.

Serbia, which maintains strong ties with Russia and has not imposed sanctions on Moscow, has previously faced scrutiny over suspected foreign influence in regional security incidents. In May, three Serbian nationals linked to a “foreign power” were arrested after similar anti-Semitic acts, including defacement of synagogues and a Holocaust memorial in France.

All crimes reportedly took place between April and September 2025. The arrested suspects are scheduled to appear before the Higher Public Prosecutor’s Office in Smederevo within 48 hours for questioning. Authorities have emphasized that investigations are ongoing, and international cooperation is continuing to identify any further involvement.
