Selena Gomez, one of the most loved singers and actresses, is once again the target of online bullying. After the release of her new music video Into The Dark, people on social media started body-shaming her and spreading rumours that she had done cosmetic surgery. However, singer Grimes came forward to defend Selena, saying that such attacks are cruel and must stop.
Selena’s new single Into The Dark marks her big return to music. The song is also part of Netflix’s show Nobody Wants This season 2, which stars Kristen Bell and Adam Brody. When the music video came out on Thursday, many fans were happy to see Selena back in action. But instead of focusing on her song, some people online began talking negatively about her looks.
A post from a parody account on X (formerly Twitter) went viral, claiming that Selena had cosmetic surgery “gone wrong.” The post quickly gathered more than 61 million views and thousands of comments and shares. Many users mocked her facial appearance and even made rude comments about her weight. Some also compared her latest photos with old ones, accusing her of using Botox or fillers.
However, many of these images were later found to be edited or taken from angles that made her look different. Despite that, the online criticism grew stronger, with some people continuing to post harsh comments.
Grimes Steps In: “This Is Disturbing and Should Not Be Okay”
Canadian musician Grimes, who is also known for being Elon Musk’s former partner and the mother of his three children, defended Selena publicly. She said she had been online for just two days but was shocked by how people treated Selena.
Grimes wrote on X, “I watched the Into The Dark video, and aside from a few close-up shots that people misused, Selena looks absolutely beautiful—probably one of the most stunning women I’ve ever seen.” She added that people should think about how such words affect someone’s mental health.
Grimes also pointed out that bullying on such a large scale should not be tolerated. “Imagine how it feels to have millions of people talk badly about your face or your body. How strong must Selena be to deal with that every day?” she said. “We should not allow this type of high-school-level bullying to continue. Accounts that spread body-shaming should be suspended.”
She reminded everyone that many young girls look up to Selena Gomez and that such online hate can make them feel insecure about their own bodies. “When young people read these cruel comments, they may start to believe that their worth depends on how they look. That’s not right,” Grimes said.
The Internet’s Cruel Side
This incident once again shows the dark side of social media. Celebrities often face heavy judgment for their looks, weight, or lifestyle. Selena Gomez has spoken before about her struggles with body image and health issues. She has lupus, an autoimmune disease that can cause weight changes and fatigue. In the past, she has asked people to stop commenting on her body, explaining that she cannot always control how she looks.
Even so, many online users continue to focus on her appearance rather than her work. Experts say this kind of behavior can seriously harm a person’s mental health, leading to anxiety and depression.
Fans Support Selena
While some users mocked her, many fans came forward to support the singer. They praised her confidence and thanked Grimes for standing up for her. Supporters flooded social media with kind messages, reminding others that Selena has always promoted kindness and mental health awareness through her foundation and social projects.
One fan wrote, “Selena is one of the most real and honest artists out there. People need to stop spreading hate.” Another said, “Grimes is absolutely right. This constant body-shaming is toxic.”
A Call for Respect Online
Selena Gomez has not directly responded to the recent trolling, but she has always promoted self-love and positivity. In earlier interviews, she said, “Be kind to others. You never know what they’re going through.”
Grimes’ statement has now started a larger conversation about how social media platforms should handle bullying. Many believe that stronger rules are needed to prevent people from spreading false or edited pictures and making hurtful comments.
This incident reminds us that even successful and strong celebrities can be deeply affected by hate online. As Grimes said, “It’s disturbing and unfair. We should be better than this.”
Selena continues to focus on her music and acting career, inspiring millions of fans worldwide. Her story is a reminder to treat people with respect, both online and offline.
