Indian cricketer Shreyas Iyer has shared that he is slowly recovering from a serious spleen injury he suffered during the third One Day International (ODI) match against Australia in Sydney. The 30-year-old batsman, who also serves as India’s vice-captain in limited-overs cricket, was injured while attempting a remarkable catch during the game.
The injury happened when Iyer made a stunning dive to catch Australian player Alex Carey. Although he successfully completed the catch, Iyer landed awkwardly on his abdomen and was seen in visible pain immediately after. The match was momentarily paused as medical staff rushed to his aid before he was taken off the field and later admitted to a hospital.
After thorough medical examinations, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed that Iyer had lacerated his spleen and experienced internal bleeding. The situation was described as serious but stable. Doctors said he would require careful monitoring and rest before making a full recovery.
Breaking his silence a few days after the incident, Iyer took to social media to thank fans and supporters for their kind wishes. “I’m currently in recovery process and getting better every passing day,” he wrote. He expressed heartfelt gratitude for the messages of support from teammates, fans, and well-wishers, adding, “Thank you for keeping me in your thoughts.” His post reflected optimism and a positive attitude toward healing.
India’s Twenty20 captain, Suryakumar Yadav, spoke about Iyer’s injury, calling it a “rare” case. Yadav added, “But rare things happen to rare talent. God is with him and he will recover soon and we will take him along with us.” His encouraging words were echoed by other Indian players, who expressed confidence in Iyer’s strength and determination to bounce back.
Due to the injury, Shreyas Iyer has been ruled out of India’s ongoing T20 series against Australia. The second match of the five-game series is scheduled to take place at a packed Melbourne Cricket Ground, while the first match in Canberra was washed out due to rain. Iyer’s absence is a significant loss for the team, but his health remains the top priority for the management.
Over the past few years, Iyer has become one of India’s most reliable middle-order batsmen, known for his calm temperament and sharp batting skills. His role as vice-captain adds leadership strength to the squad. The injury comes at an unfortunate time, especially with India’s busy cricket calendar ahead. However, both fans and officials remain hopeful that he will recover in time for future series.
Medical experts associated with the Indian cricket team have described Iyer’s condition as uncommon in cricket injuries. The spleen, an organ that plays an important role in blood filtration and immunity, is rarely injured in sports unless a severe impact occurs. The team’s physiotherapists are working closely with specialists to ensure a safe and complete recovery.
Reports suggest that Iyer is responding well to treatment. He continues to rest under medical supervision and is expected to return to light training once cleared by doctors. The team management has made it clear that his recovery will not be rushed, ensuring that he returns only when fully fit.
Social media platforms have been filled with messages of support for Shreyas Iyer. Fans from across the world have praised his bravery and wished him a speedy recovery. The Indian cricket community stands united behind him, confident that he will make a strong comeback.
