In the final round, McIlroy missed a short putt on the 18th hole, which made the match go into extra play, called a playoff. But he stayed calm and came back to the same hole. This time, he hit the ball very close to the hole—only two feet away—and made the winning putt.
After the ball went into the hole, Rory lifted his arms, let his club fall behind him, and dropped to his knees. He was filled with joy and relief. He then hugged his wife Erica and their daughter Poppy as fans shouted his name. He walked to Butler Cabin to wear the famous Green Jacket, which he nearly lost earlier in the round.
“There was a lot of feeling inside me, and it all came out on the 18th hole,” Rory said after the win. “This moment makes all the hard years and close losses worth it.”
By winning the Masters, Rory became one of only six people in golf to win the four biggest events—joining legends like Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, and Gary Player. He is also the first European to do this.
Rory is 35 years old. He came to this year’s Masters hoping to end a long wait. He had not won a major event since 2014. He also had a bad memory of the Masters from 2011 when he lost a big lead on the last part of the course.
This year, he played well at the start and had a four-shot lead. But later in the game, things got shaky. Other players were also doing well, and Rory’s lead slowly faded. It looked like he might lose again.
But Rory did not give up. On the 15th hole, he hit a tricky shot that went around trees and over water, landing six feet from the hole. He missed the long eagle try but made a birdie, taking the lead again.
Justin Rose, playing before him, made a birdie on the last hole and tied with Rory. Then Rory hit another great shot on the 17th hole, landing two feet from the cup. He made birdie again and stayed in the game.
He had one more chance to win on the 18th in normal play, but missed another short putt, so the game went into extra play.
In the playoff, Rory hit a great shot again and made the winning putt. This time, he made no mistake.
“This is my 17th time at the Masters,” Rory said. “I started to wonder if I would ever win here. For 10 years, I felt the pressure of trying to win the Grand Slam. Now that I’ve done it, I’m not sure what we’ll talk about next time.”
It was a day full of big moments, strong feelings, and amazing golf. For Rory McIlroy, it was a day he will never forget.
