Israel Threatens to Escalate Strikes on Hezbollah in Lebanon

Tensions between Israel and Lebanon are rising again as Israel signaled it may intensify operations against Hezbollah, the Iran-backed militant group, accusing it of rearming despite a ceasefire last year.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the country will not allow Lebanon to become a renewed front, emphasizing Israel’s right to self-defence. Defence Minister Israel Katz also criticized Lebanon’s leadership for delaying action against Hezbollah’s armament.

Background of the Conflict

Hezbollah, which has long opposed Israel, suffered significant losses during the Gaza war that began in October 2023, including the death of its chief, Hassan Nasrallah, in September 2024. Despite this, the group remains armed and financially capable, continuing to challenge regional stability.

Israel has maintained troops in five areas of southern Lebanon and conducted regular air strikes targeting Hezbollah positions, arguing the moves are necessary for security. Recent days have seen an uptick in these operations, including a deadly raid last Thursday.

Human and Regional Impact

The escalating military activity has renewed fears for communities along the northern border. Thousands of Israeli civilians were previously evacuated during the rocket attacks following the Gaza conflict. On the Lebanese side, strikes in Nabatiyeh district killed four people recently, with local residents gathering to mourn those killed and condemn the attacks.

International Pressure and Diplomatic Efforts

The United States has repeatedly urged Lebanon to disarm Hezbollah, while the Lebanese government has initiated a plan to assert a state monopoly on weapons, starting in the south. However, Hezbollah and its allies oppose these moves, creating a stalemate that risks further escalation.
