The Phoenix Suns earned a dramatic 114-113 win over the Minnesota Timberwolves in an NBA Cup match on Friday night. The victory came after a stunning late comeback, as the Suns overturned an eight-point deficit in the final minute of the game. Collin Gillespie was the hero, scoring a season-high 20 points, including the game-winning basket with just 6.4 seconds left. His calm finish completed one of the most exciting endings of the Suns’ season.
The Suns struggled for most of the fourth quarter and looked completely out of the contest when Minnesota took a 113-105 lead with 1:09 left on the clock. But Phoenix refused to give up. Dillon Brooks, who finished with 22 points and four three-pointers, kept them in the fight, while Mark Williams added 19 points and eight rebounds. With this victory, the Suns improved to 2-0 in Group A of the NBA Cup, continuing their strong run with nine wins in their last eleven games.
Minnesota, however, will regret how they let the match slip away. Anthony Edwards had a brilliant night with 41 points and five made threes. He also scored 19 points in the third quarter alone, helping the Timberwolves erase an 18-point deficit from the first half. Julius Randle supported him with 20 points, and Rudy Gobert contributed 12 points and 12 rebounds. Despite all their efforts, the Timberwolves fell apart in the closing seconds due to mistakes that proved extremely costly.
Minnesota’s troubles began when they committed three turnovers in the final minute, two of which directly resulted in points for the Suns. Edwards, who had been outstanding the entire game, missed two crucial free throws with just 12.7 seconds remaining. These misses opened the door for Phoenix. Before that, Jordan Goodwin played a huge role in the comeback, making a three-pointer and a layup off Minnesota’s turnovers, cutting the Timberwolves’ lead to just one point at 113-112.
Then came the final blow. With the crowd on its feet and time winding down, Gillespie took control and hit the decisive shot to give the Suns a one-point advantage. Minnesota still had a chance to respond, but they could not convert in the final moments. The Wolves’ late mistakes overshadowed their strong effort earlier in the night.
Edwards has been impressive in Cup play, scoring 37, 30, and now 41 points in his three games. But his late free-throw misses were difficult for his team to overcome. Minnesota now sits at 2-1 in Group A and has one Cup game left against Oklahoma City.
For Phoenix, the win came despite a rough shooting night from Devin Booker. Booker scored only 16 points on 4-of-18 shooting and fouled out late in the game. He did record 10 assists but also committed nine turnovers. The Suns as a team struggled with ball control, finishing with a season-high 27 turnovers. Minnesota turned those mistakes into 29 points, which allowed them to stay ahead for most of the second half.
Still, when it mattered most, it was Minnesota who lost control. A combination of turnovers, missed free throws, and defensive lapses gave the Suns the opening they needed. Phoenix still has two more Cup games, against Sacramento and Oklahoma City, as they aim to stay unbeaten in Group A.
With this thrilling victory, the Suns proved that even on a night full of mistakes, determination and late execution can completely change the outcome. Gillespie’s final shot ensured Phoenix walked away with a memorable win, keeping their strong NBA Cup momentum alive.
