Club Brugge won 2-1 against Atalanta in an exciting Champions League match on Wednesday. The winning goal came from a penalty in extra time, which made Atalanta’s players and fans very angry. Gustaf Nilsson was the main player in this moment—he fell in the box after a small touch from Atalanta defender Isak Hien. The referee gave a penalty, and Nilsson scored, making the home fans very happy while Atalanta players were shocked and upset.

Before this, the match was balanced. Brugge scored first when Ferran Jutgla finished a great move in the 15th minute. Just before half-time, Atalanta’s Mario Pasalic scored a header to make it 1-1. The game was looking like it would end in a draw, but the late penalty changed everything.

Atalanta’s coach, Gian Piero Gasperini, was so angry that he walked off the field before the match was over. His players kept complaining to the referee, but they only got yellow cards.

Charles De Ketelaere, who returned to play in his hometown, was also unhappy with the referee’s decision. "I saw the video, and I think if 100 people watched it, all 100 would say it was not a penalty," he said. "Losing like this in the last minute is painful. It does not feel fair."

Atalanta now have to work hard in the second match next week to try and win and move to the next round, where they could face Aston Villa or Lille. Their midfielder Marten de Roon said they should stop thinking about the penalty and focus on playing better. "It is useless to talk about the penalty. Anyone who knows football can see it was not a penalty," he said. "But we must think about our own game. We did not play well today, and we need to be better if we want to win."

Brugge started the game strongly. They attacked Atalanta and did not let them play their usual way. Their hard work paid off when Jutgla scored the first goal. Atalanta struggled but got back into the match just before the break when Pasalic scored a header.

In the second half, Brugge kept attacking, but Atalanta had two big chances to take the lead. First, Brugge’s goalkeeper Simon Mignolet made a great save to stop Davide Zappacosta’s header. Later, substitute Lazar Samardzic missed an open chance and shot wide.

Everything changed in extra time when Nilsson fell in the box and the referee gave a penalty. The decision will be discussed for a long time, but for Brugge, this win gives them a good chance to reach the next round. Atalanta will now fight hard in the second match to try and turn things around.
