Marine scientists in Mexico have documented a remarkable and rare instance of orcas hunting juvenile great white sharks, offering new insight into the sophisticated hunting strategies of these apex predators. The research, published in Frontiers in Marine Science, marks the first confirmed observation of this behaviour in Mexican waters.
Footage captured between 2020 and 2022 using drones and underwater cameras shows orcas working in coordinated groups to flip young great white sharks onto their backs. This manoeuvre induces a temporary paralysis called tonic immobility, allowing the orcas to safely extract and share the sharks’ nutrient-rich livers while leaving the rest of the carcass behind.
While similar predation has been observed in regions such as South Africa, Australia, and California, this is the first verified case in Mexico, highlighting the adaptability and wide-ranging hunting capabilities of orca pods. Researchers noted that juvenile sharks are especially vulnerable, suggesting that orcas may target them seasonally, which could influence local shark populations over time.
Marine biologists emphasize that the discovery expands our understanding of orca behaviour and the complex predator-prey dynamics in marine ecosystems. Even apex predators like great white sharks are not immune to the intelligence and cooperative hunting skills of orcas, underscoring the delicate balance of life beneath the ocean’s surface.
This observation adds to growing evidence of orcas’ strategic hunting methods and their ability to adapt to different environments, further showcasing the sophistication of these oceanic hunters.
