San Francisco, United States: OpenAI has expressed concern that advancements in AI, particularly with the realistic voice feature of its latest model, GPT-4o, could lead to people forming stronger emotional bonds with bots than with humans. The company fears that the realistic voice capabilities may exacerbate the issue of anthropomorphization, where users attribute human-like qualities to artificial intelligence.
In a recent safety report, OpenAI highlighted the potential risks associated with users developing misplaced trust in AI. They cited existing literature suggesting that interactions with AI designed to mimic human conversation could lead to increased dependence on the technology. The advanced audio features of GPT-4o, which enhance its conversational realism, are seen as potentially intensifying these effects.

“Anthropomorphization involves attributing human-like behaviors and characteristics to nonhuman entities, such as AI models,” OpenAI stated. They noted that the realistic voice of GPT-4o facilitates more human-like interactions, potentially deepening users' emotional connections with the AI.
The report described instances where testers engaged with the AI in a manner suggesting personal bonds, such as expressing sorrow at the end of their interaction. While these instances might seem harmless, OpenAI believes they warrant further investigation to understand their long-term implications.
The company also raised concerns that frequent interactions with AI could impact users' social skills and their relationships with real people. According to OpenAI, the deferential nature of AI—where users can interrupt and direct the conversation at will—might distort social norms and behaviors that are typical in human interactions.
“The ability for AI to remember details and perform tasks could make individuals overly reliant on the technology,” OpenAI added. This observation has led to broader discussions about whether it is time to reassess the effects of such technology on human interaction and relationships.
Alon Yamin, co-founder and CEO of the AI anti-plagiarism detection platform Copyleaks, echoed these concerns. He emphasized that AI should never replace genuine human interactions. “The recent concerns shared by OpenAI highlight a growing question: Should we pause to consider how this technology affects our relationships and social norms?”
Further testing is planned to explore how the voice capabilities of GPT-4o might influence emotional attachment and dependency. Additionally, the AI model has been shown to potentially generate misleading information and conspiracy theories when prompted, raising further concerns about the technology's impact.
The controversy surrounding AI and voice technology has also been spotlighted by a recent incident involving actress Scarlett Johansson. OpenAI faced backlash in June after using a voice model similar to Johansson’s in their latest chatbot. Despite OpenAI's denial that the voice was Johansson's, the situation was complicated by CEO Sam Altman’s social media reference to the film "Her," in which Johansson voiced an AI character. The film, a favorite of Altman’s, depicts a man falling in love with an AI assistant, further fueling debates about AI's role in human relationships.
As OpenAI continues to investigate these issues, the broader conversation about the intersection of technology and human interaction remains as pertinent as ever.
