OpenAI has introduced its newest AI models, GPT-5.2 Pro and GPT-5.2 Thinking, heralding a significant advancement in mathematical and scientific reasoning. These new developments are claimed to be vital for ensuring reliability in technical tasks and represent a pivotal move toward achieving artificial general intelligence (AGI)—machines that can think akin to humans or surpass human cognitive abilities.
This announcement coincides with intensifying competition from Google, as its Gemini 3 Pro has recently outperformed earlier versions of ChatGPT in complex reasoning and multimodal tasks. OpenAI recognizes the competitive landscape but remains hopeful. CEO Sam Altman highlighted that the company’s substantial investments in computing infrastructure are essential for future growth and innovation, despite still not being profitable.
Initial assessments suggest that GPT-5.2 is a notable enhancement over its predecessors, delivering more accurate and contextually relevant responses, though Google’s AI holds the advantage in specific metrics. Additionally, OpenAI’s applications head, Fidji Simo, hinted at an upcoming “ChatGPT adult mode,” which is anticipated to launch early next year featuring enhanced age verification.
Facing ongoing scrutiny, including lawsuits regarding unsafe interactions with minors, OpenAI has issued alerts concerning cybersecurity risks tied to its advanced models. Nevertheless, the firm is forging ahead, determined to retain its leading position in AI innovation within the competitive landscape against Google.
