Elon Musk and OpenAI boss Sam Altman started the company together in 2015. But Musk left before the company became very popular. Later, in 2023, Musk started his own company called xAI. Since then, Musk has tried to stop OpenAI from becoming a profit-making business.
OpenAI wants to raise $40 billion this year. To do that, they must fully change to a company that earns money. This is what Musk is trying to block.
In the new court papers, OpenAI said Musk has been attacking them in many ways — such as posting bad things on his social media, asking for company papers for no reason, filing cases just to waste time, and even trying to buy OpenAI in a fake way.
OpenAI told the judge that Musk should not only stop doing this but also be punished for the trouble he has caused already.
The court case will go to trial next year in spring.
Musk’s lawyers didn’t say anything yet about OpenAI’s complaint.
On X (formerly Twitter), a platform that Musk owns, OpenAI wrote, “Elon keeps attacking us. He wants to slow us down and take control of our work for himself.”
Last month, Musk’s new company xAI bought X in a deal worth $33 billion. Now the value of X and xAI are connected.
Last year, Musk also sued OpenAI. He said the company had forgotten its first promise — to make AI that helps all people, not just to make money. OpenAI and Sam Altman said this is not true. They believe Musk is only doing this because he wants to stop a strong competitor.
At the center of this fight is OpenAI’s plan to become a profit-making company. OpenAI says this is needed to get more money and keep up in the fast-growing tech world.
Earlier this year, Musk and some investors tried to buy OpenAI for $97.4 billion. Sam Altman said “no thank you” and refused the offer.
So now, two big names in tech — Elon Musk and OpenAI — are in a serious fight over the future of smart technology.
