The evacuation and shelter-in-place measures at F.E. Warren Air Force Base in Cheyenne have been lifted following the resolution of a reported security threat near Gate 1. Officials have confirmed that there is no ongoing risk, although emergency teams remain present as a precaution.
The alert originated early Thursday morning with the discovery of a suspicious package at the base's main entry point. This prompted a significant emergency response that included the Cheyenne Police Department, the Laramie County Sheriff’s Office, and the Wyoming Highway Patrol among others.
As a precautionary measure, a large security perimeter was established and personnel in multiple facilities were instructed to shelter in place. The Child Development Center evacuated children to safety, and residents nearby were temporarily asked to vacate their homes. Officials stressed the necessity of these actions for public safety.
The incident resulted in significant traffic disruptions, with portions of Interstate 25 closed for over an hour and several local roads blocked as emergency teams dealt with the package. Visitors were diverted to alternate entry points during this event.
By late morning, law enforcement confirmed that the package was non-threatening, leading to the lifting of evacuation orders and the reopening of roads. However, Gate 1 will remain closed while officials continue their investigation.
This occurrence underscores the robust security measures in place at military facilities, demonstrating the commitment to safeguarding personnel and nearby communities against potential threats.
