Kim Jong Un, the leader of North Korea, is preparing to unveil initiatives aimed at fortifying the nation’s nuclear capabilities during an upcoming pivotal party congress, as per official announcements. This follows Kim’s oversight of a recent missile launch, part of an ongoing series that has exacerbated regional tensions.
Kim has called for an “expansion” and modernization of missile production, indicating a concentrated effort to advance the nation’s strategic arsenal. The specifics of these initiatives are anticipated to be disclosed at the ninth Communist Party congress, scheduled to occur in the coming weeks—the first since 2021.
At this congress, the ruling party is expected to introduce a new five-year plan focusing on defense and economic growth. Kim underscored the recent successful test of a large-caliber multiple rocket launcher as a crucial move toward reinforcing their strategic deterrent, affirming that this system now enables precise, targeted attacks.
During the launch, missiles successfully hit targets located 358.5 kilometers away, aimed towards the Sea of Japan. Reports confirmed that some of the missiles landed beyond North Korea’s Exclusive Economic Zone. South Korea’s military noted the detection of several short-range ballistic missiles fired from the region north of Pyongyang in the same trajectory.
Kim cautioned that advancements in military capabilities would result in “excruciating mental agony” for any forces attempting to provoke conflict with North Korea. Analysts suggest that the new rocket system may incorporate sophisticated guidance technology designed to resist GPS disruption, thereby enhancing its accuracy.
The event also featured Kim’s daughter, Kim Ju Ae, along with senior missile officials, underscoring the significance of this military endeavor. Despite the developmental hurdles, Kim hailed the test as a substantial leap in reinforcing North Korea’s strategic power.
