North Korea Opens New Beach Tourist Zone in Wonsan

North Korea held a grand opening ceremony for its Wonsan-Kalma coastal tourist zone, located on the country's east coast. Leader Kim Jong Un cut the ribbon at the event. The state-run media described the resort as a major step in building North Korea’s tourism industry. 

Biggest Tourist Site

This is the largest tourism project ever in North Korea. It includes hotels, hostels, and other buildings that together can accommodate around 20,000 visitors.Facilities include sea beaches, swimming areas, sports grounds, dining places, cafes, and recreation spots. 

Opening Plan
The resort will open to North Korean citizens on July 1, 2025, according to official reports. 
There is no date yet for international visitors, but state media hints that foreign tourists might be welcomed in the future.

Why It Matters
The project has been described by Kim as one of the year's "greatest achievements" and a proud first step toward building a tourism sector. Tourism is among the few legal ways North Korea can bring in foreign money, especially under tight UN sanctions. 

Role of Foreign Visitors
North Korea has only recently begun allowing Russian tourists since February 2024. Groups from other countries, especially China, have not returned yet.The Russian ambassador attended the opening, fueling expectations that Russian guests will visit soon. Analysts suggest Chinese tours might follow once relations improve.
