Japanese automaker Nissan is accelerating its push into autonomous vehicles as part of a broader strategy to revive its struggling auto business. In a recent Tokyo demonstration, a Nissan Ariya sedan equipped with 11 cameras, five radars, and next-generation LiDAR sensors navigated crowded city streets, stopping for red lights, pedestrians, and other vehicles.
Unlike Nissan’s earlier self-driving systems, which were designed for well-marked freeway driving, the new technology is engineered to handle the complexities of congested urban environments. The system leverages advanced AI, sensor fusion, and real-time data processing to interpret unpredictable traffic scenarios.

The global self-driving car market is projected to reach $2 trillion by 2030, driven by innovations in AI, sensing technologies, and high-speed data computation, according to market researcher IndustryARC. Nissan joins a competitive field that includes Toyota Motor Corp., which has partnered with Google’s Waymo. Waymo has also entered Japan in collaboration with a local taxi service, although it remains in testing phases.
Other major automakers, including Honda, General Motors, and Mercedes-Benz, as well as tech companies like Amazon with its Zoox subsidiary, are actively advancing autonomous driving solutions.
A Nissan spokesperson highlighted the company’s commitment to safety and urban mobility, stating, “Our next-generation autonomous technology is designed to make city driving safer and more efficient, bringing us closer to a fully autonomous future.”
