A new study has found that the way people speak in everyday life can give early signs of cognitive decline. The research was done by the University of Toronto and Baycrest Hospital, and it was published in the Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research on November 7, 2025. The findings suggest that problems such as word-finding difficulty during natural speech may be linked to deeper changes in brain function.

The study looked at speech samples from two groups of people. One group included 67 older adults aged 65 to 75. The second group had 174 adults aged 18 to 90. By comparing these samples, researchers tried to understand how natural speech reflects the brain’s executive function, which is the ability to plan, focus, solve problems, and manage tasks.

According to the research team, executive function slowly declines with age. However, it is hard to track this decline using normal tests because people may get used to the test format over time. This makes it difficult to measure true changes in brain function. Because of this, speech-based assessments may be more helpful. Natural speech does not require training or practice, so it shows a person’s real cognitive ability.

One of the main findings was that word-finding problems were closely linked to weaker executive function. Older adults showed this connection more strongly, but the study also found that this link exists across all ages. This means that speech problems can show brain changes even in younger adults.

Researchers also compared speech findings with results from the Montreal Cognitive Assessment, a common test used to check for dementia. They found that speech timing had only a small connection to the test scores. This suggests that speech patterns might show cognitive decline in a different and possibly earlier way than traditional tests.

The study concluded that natural speech analysis can be a simple and sensitive way to understand a person’s cognitive ability. It may help doctors identify early signs of cognitive decline without complicated or time-consuming tests. This can be useful for tracking brain health throughout life, not just in old age.

The research offers hope that one day, doctors may only need a short conversation to spot early warning signs. With more studies in the future, speech-based tools could become an easy and low-cost method to support early diagnosis and better care for people at risk of cognitive decline.
