On Sunday, California’s National Guard soldiers were placed around federal government buildings in Los Angeles. This happened as police and protesters clashed during demonstrations against immigration raids carried out by the federal government.
The protests had been going on for three days, with many people unhappy about President Donald Trump’s immigration policies. Governor Gavin Newsom of California, a Democrat, said the National Guard’s deployment was not legal and asked the Trump administration to stop sending troops to Los Angeles.
The police said some protests became "unlawful assemblies" because some protesters threw things like concrete and bottles at officers. Videos also showed that some self-driving cars from a company called Waymo were set on fire in the city center on Sunday evening.
Police said they were making arrests and used officers on horseback to try to control the crowds. Some protesters shouted "shame on you" at the police and blocked a major highway called the 101 Freeway.

Many protesters carried Mexican flags and signs criticizing U.S. immigration authorities. A group called the Party for Socialism and Liberation held a rally with speakers near City Hall.
Governor Newsom said President Trump was creating a false crisis and violating California’s rights as a state. He called Trump’s actions those of a dictator, not a president. Trump’s team disagreed, saying people saw violence and chaos at the protests.
Earlier in the day, about a dozen National Guard soldiers and Homeland Security officers pushed back protesters outside a federal building in downtown Los Angeles. The U.S. Northern Command said 300 National Guard soldiers were sent to protect federal workers and buildings in three parts of the city.
President Trump called the protesters "violent mobs" and told his government officials to do whatever it takes to stop the "riots." When asked about using the military to control the protests, he said it would depend on whether there was an actual rebellion.
The Defense Secretary said the military was ready to send active-duty troops if violence keeps happening. Around 500 Marines near Los Angeles were prepared to be sent if needed.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass blamed the Trump administration for making the situation worse by sending the National Guard, but she also criticized protesters who used violence.
An immigration advocate named Vanessa Cardenas said the government was using the protests as an excuse to abuse power and cause fights over immigration.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said the National Guard’s job was to keep people safe during peaceful protests and help the police.
Trump wants to deport a record number of people living in the U.S. illegally and has set a goal for ICE agents to arrest 3,000 migrants every day. Many people in Los Angeles are Hispanic and were born outside the U.S.
Some of the immigration raids have included people who live legally in the U.S., which has caused legal problems.
The President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, criticized the U.S. for the raids and sending the National Guard. She said the problem won’t be solved with violence or raids but by working together on immigration reform.
Trump said he sent the National Guard under a law called Title 10, which lets the federal government call the Guard to protect federal workers and property. But this law also says the orders should come through state governors, so it’s not clear if Trump had the legal right to send troops without California’s permission.
The Guard’s mission is to protect federal workers and buildings where protests are happening or might happen, especially related to immigration enforcement
