Meta Platforms is set to resume training its artificial intelligence models using publicly available content from Facebook and Instagram users in the UK, following a period of regulatory pause. This decision, announced by the company, comes after Meta had previously suspended the AI training in response to regulatory feedback.
Beginning next week, UK users of Facebook and Instagram will receive in-app notifications detailing Meta's data usage procedures and informing them about how they can opt out of having their data used for AI training. The notifications will outline the process for objecting to the use of their public posts, including photos, captions, and comments, which Meta plans to incorporate into its generative AI models.

The company clarified that the AI training will not involve private messages or data from users under the age of 18. This move follows Meta's earlier decision in mid-June to halt its AI training plans in Europe after receiving directives from the Irish privacy regulator to delay its data utilization strategy.
Meta's decision to pause the training also allowed the company to address concerns raised by the UK's Information Commissioner's Office (ICO). Since then, Meta has worked to align its practices with regulatory expectations, resulting in simplified procedures for users to object to data processing and an extended period for submitting such objections.
The regulatory scrutiny came after advocacy group NOYB criticized Meta's initial approach, arguing that the company's notifications were inadequate to meet the European Union's strict privacy and transparency requirements. Meta’s updated approach aims to address these concerns and ensure compliance with EU privacy standards while moving forward with its AI development initiatives
