In a recent address, Meta Platforms urged the Malaysian government to rethink its potential social media restrictions for individuals under 16. The company's Southeast Asia public policy director, Clara Koh, cautioned that a total ban could inadvertently drive young users to less secure online alternatives.
Speaking from Kuala Lumpur, Koh pointed out that blanket bans have often proven ineffective in other regions. Such measures can lead to a “migration effect,” where users venture into unregulated digital environments that lack adequate safety features.
Previously, the Malaysian government announced its intention to collaborate with social media firms to establish age-based restrictions by mid-2026. This initiative aims to enhance online safety and minimize minors' exposure to harmful content.
However, Meta expressed concern that outright bans may generate more problems than they solve. Drawing lessons from international regulatory cases, including Australia's experiences, the company highlighted potential enforcement challenges that can diminish the overall effectiveness of such policies.
Koh recommended that Malaysia focus on crafting a comprehensive regulatory framework that ensures uniform standards across all digital platforms. Collaboration across the industry is essential for creating safer online environments tailored for younger users.
Moreover, Meta noted that social media plays a vital role in youth development, fostering communication, self-expression, and community involvement. A complete prohibition could lead to increased isolation among teens, a trend observed in countries with stringent regulations.
To support safer online practices, Meta also advised that parents should be central to digital regulations, advocating tools and policies that enable families to monitor and guide their children’s online experiences. The company reaffirmed its dedication to partnering with Malaysian officials to cultivate a secure and inclusive digital landscape.
