In a remarkable achievement, Maruti Suzuki India has sold over 30 million cars in the domestic market, cementing its position as the country’s largest automaker. The company’s journey began with the iconic Maruti 800, first delivered on December 14, 1983, and has since transformed India’s automobile landscape.
It took the company 28 years and 2 months to reach its first 10 million units sold. The pace accelerated dramatically afterward, with the next 10 million sold in just 7 years and 5 months, and the final 10 million in a record 6 years and 4 months, highlighting the growing demand for cars in India.
Among the 30 million units sold, the Alto emerged as the most popular model, crossing 47 lakh units, followed by the Wagon R at around 34 lakh, and the Swift with over 32 lakh units. Compact SUVs like the Brezza and Fronx also made it into the top ten best-selling models, reflecting shifting preferences toward SUVs in recent years.
Today, Maruti Suzuki offers more than 170 variants across 19 models, catering to a wide spectrum of Indian buyers. With car penetration still at approximately 33 vehicles per 1,000 people, the company continues to see potential for growth across urban and semi-urban India.
This milestone not only reflects Maruti Suzuki’s enduring popularity but also the evolution of India’s car market over four decades—transitioning from affordable entry-level cars to a diverse portfolio that includes compact SUVs, hatchbacks, and premium models.
