US politician Marjorie Taylor Greene, a well-known figure in the far-right movement, has announced that she is stepping down from her seat in Congress. Her decision comes just one week after President Donald Trump withdrew his support for her, marking a major shift in their long-standing political alliance.
Greene, who represents Georgia and was first elected in 2020, shared the news in an online video. She said she had "never fit in" in Washington and claimed she had always been disliked by many in the capital. She added that she did not want her supporters or her family to go through what she described as a “hurtful and hateful” primary battle, especially now that Trump is backing someone else.
She confirmed that she will leave office on January 5, 2026.
Greene was once one of Trump’s most loyal allies and a prominent voice in the “Make America Great Again” movement. But on November 7, Trump publicly withdrew his support for her, calling her “Wacky Marjorie” and later attacking her again on social media, where he labeled her a “lightweight” and even a “traitor” to the Republican Party.
Following Trump’s comments, Greene said she began receiving a wave of threats.
Her resignation signals deeper divisions within the MAGA movement, especially after strong results by Democrats in recent local elections. Tensions increased further after Trump’s unexpected positive meeting with left-leaning New York mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani, which surprised many of his supporters.
There has also been unrest among conservatives over Trump’s shifting comments about the case involving Jeffrey Epstein, a convicted sex offender whose connections to powerful individuals continue to raise controversy.
Greene said that her support for victims in the Epstein case played a role in the backlash she received.
“Standing up for American women who were abused at 14, trafficked, and exploited by powerful men should not make me a target,” she said. She added that being attacked by the president she once supported deeply hurt her.
Greene’s exit marks one of the most dramatic breaks between Trump and a longtime supporter, highlighting growing fractures inside the conservative movement as the 2026 elections draw closer.
