In a shocking turn of events in Ridgefield, Connecticut, 31-year-old Steven James Uricchio has been charged with the murder of his father, marking the town’s first murder in over two decades. The crime has been described by Uricchio’s defense attorney as a “tragedy of Shakespearean proportions.”

On Saturday, August 3, police received a call reporting that a man had been harmed at a residence in Ridgefield. When officers arrived, they found Uricchio outside the house, wearing a dark blue shirt and boxer shorts. He appeared to have blood on his hands and was sweating heavily. Uricchio complied with police instructions, extending his arms as he was approached by authorities.

Upon questioning, Uricchio admitted to murdering his father, 83-year-old Marc Uricchio, and claimed he had killed him “really, really badly.” He was then searched for weapons, and investigators proceeded to the crime scene inside the home.

Upon entering the residence, authorities discovered blood spattered on the stairs and walls. A fillet knife covered in blood was found at the top of the stairs. In the bedroom, Marc Uricchio was found deceased on the floor. His body showed severe mutilation; both his groin and abdomen were extensively damaged, and some of his internal organs had been left outside his body.

Police Captain Jeffrey Raines noted that this is the first murder in Ridgefield since 2003, and described the crime as having “shaken the town.” He emphasized that the incident is particularly unsettling for a community known for its safety.

In the hours following his arrest, Uricchio complained of stomach issues, which he attributed to taking a quarter of a bottle of Advil earlier. He was transported to Danbury Hospital for evaluation, where he also mentioned being on medication he hadn't taken in months and admitted to regular cannabis use.

After being cleared from the hospital, Uricchio was returned to Ridgefield police headquarters and placed on suicide watch. On Monday, August 5, he was arraigned at Danbury Superior Court. In court, Uricchio appeared nearly catatonic, needing assistance to stand when asked by the judge.

Defense attorney Willie Dow stated that Uricchio has a significant history of mental health issues. Dow agreed with the prosecution’s request for a mental health evaluation and continued suicide watch for his client. The judge granted these requests.

“This is a tragedy of Shakespearean dimensions. It has devastated the family as well as my client,” Dow told News 12 Connecticut.

Uricchio is currently being held on $1.5 million bail and is scheduled to return to court on September 4.
