A Lufthansa flight traveling from Los Angeles to Munich had to make an emergency landing after a passenger’s iPad got stuck in a business class seat while the plane was in the air.
Flight LH453, an Airbus A380 carrying 461 passengers, took off on Wednesday, April 23. But during the flight, the crew discovered that a traveler’s iPad had gotten jammed in one of the business class seats. The situation became serious because the tablet showed clear signs of damage from the seat's movements.
The flight crew, together with air traffic control, decided to divert the plane and land safely at Logan International Airport in Boston around 2:30 am local time on Thursday, April 24.
A spokesperson for Lufthansa explained that the decision was made as a safety measure to "eliminate any potential risk, especially the chance of overheating." Damaged devices with lithium batteries can be dangerous. If the battery gets crushed or punctured, it can overheat, catch fire, or even explode.
The diversion caused a delay of about three hours for the passengers. After the issue was handled, the plane continued its journey, and they finally reached Munich at 4:35 pm local time.
Lufthansa said in a statement, "The safety of our passengers and crew is always our top priority. Diverting the flight was purely a precaution."
Similar Incidents Before
This isn’t the first time a passenger’s electronic device has caused problems during a flight. Just last month, an Air France Boeing 777 had to turn back to Paris after a passenger lost their mobile phone on the plane.
Soon after takeoff, the passenger informed the crew about the missing phone. Even after a full search by the crew and other passengers, the phone couldn’t be found. To make sure everyone stayed safe, the pilots decided it was best to return to Paris.
Because of these risks, airlines have set strict rules. Many now don’t allow passengers to charge power banks during the flight or store them in overhead compartments.
