A major protest organized by far-right activist Tommy Robinson took place in central London, attracting an estimated 150,000 people. The rally, called “Unite the Kingdom,” saw violent clashes between protesters and police, leaving 26 officers injured, four of them seriously.

Police and Protesters Clash

The Metropolitan Police reported that tensions escalated as some protesters threw bottles and other objects at officers. Injuries included broken teeth, concussions, head injuries, a prolapsed disc, and a possible broken nose. Police described the violence as “wholly unacceptable” and emphasized that while many attendees came to exercise their right to protest peacefully, others were intent on causing harm.

The police had initially arrested 25 people for various offenses but later revised the number to 24. Assistant Commissioner Matt Twist stated that the arrests were “just the start,” as the police were committed to identifying all individuals involved in the disorder.

Massive Policing Operation

To manage the protest, the Metropolitan Police deployed 1,000 officers, with an additional 500 officers drafted in from other forces, including Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire, and Devon and Cornwall. Officers faced the challenging task of keeping the large crowds under control, preventing violence, and maintaining safety for all involved.

Assistant Commissioner Twist praised the officers for “policing without fear or favor” despite the difficult circumstances. He confirmed that officers were assaulted while attempting to block access to secure areas and separate opposing groups.

Counter-Protesters Show Up

Alongside the Tommy Robinson rally, around 5,000 people joined a counter-protest organized by Stand Up To Racism. The two groups were kept apart by lines of police officers on Whitehall. Despite these measures, scuffles broke out when protesters attempted to get past police barriers.

Some demonstrators scaled fencing and scaffolding, putting themselves, others, and police at risk. Riot police, horses, and dogs were used to maintain order and keep the two groups separated. A glass bottle reportedly hit a police horse during the clashes, causing the animal and rider to stagger.

Speeches and Statements

Tommy Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, addressed the crowd at a “freedom of speech festival.” He criticized politicians for repeating his ideas without action and claimed that UK courts had prioritized the rights of undocumented migrants over those of local communities.

Last month, the Court of Appeal overturned an injunction preventing asylum seekers from being housed at The Bell Hotel in Epping, Essex. Robinson referred to cases like this as part of his broader criticism of the government’s approach to migration.

Elon Musk Joins via Videolink

Tech billionaire Elon Musk made a surprise appearance via videolink, speaking about “massive uncontrolled migration” and calling for a change in the UK government. He suggested a dissolution of Parliament and a new vote, echoing Robinson’s criticism of political leadership.

TV personalities Katie Hopkins, Laurence Fox, and Ant Middleton also spoke at the rally. Their appearances drew attention and added to the high-profile nature of the protest.

Counter-Protest Messages

At the Stand Up To Racism counter-protest, independent MP Diane Abbott addressed the crowd, emphasizing the fight against racism, violence, and fascism. She reminded attendees that these issues are not new but have always been defeated in the past.

People traveled from across the country to join the counter-protest. Participants, including Rhiannon and Sharon from south Wales, said they wanted to stand against the narrative of hate promoted by the Tommy Robinson rally. Many attendees expressed concerns about the spread of divisive and harmful ideas, emphasizing that London is not a fascist city.

Large Crowds Overwhelm Police

The Unite the Kingdom protest reportedly exceeded the expectations of its organizers. The Metropolitan Police stated that Whitehall and Parliament Square did not have enough space to accommodate all attendees. Large groups ignored police instructions, attempting to enter secure areas and spaces occupied by counter-protesters.

When officers tried to intervene, they were assaulted with punches and kicks. The police used batons, horses, and dogs to maintain control. Several scuffles occurred at Whitehall and Trafalgar Square as officers worked to prevent violence and protect the public.

Injuries and Arrests

Assistant Commissioner Twist confirmed that injuries sustained by officers included broken teeth, concussions, head injuries, and a prolapsed disc. He stressed that these injuries were the result of deliberate attacks by some individuals in the crowd.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood condemned the attacks on officers, stating, “Anyone taking part in criminal activity will face the full force of the law.” The police have vowed to continue investigations and identify everyone involved in the disorder.

The rally came to an end just after 6:30 PM, with Robinson promising that he would hold more events in the future. The protest drew widespread attention due to the participation of high-profile figures and the scale of violence that occurred.

Robinson, released from prison earlier this year, had been jailed in October for ignoring an order not to repeat false claims about a Syrian refugee, who had successfully sued him for libel. His return to public events and the large turnout of supporters highlighted his continued influence among far-right groups.

The Unite the Kingdom rally in London was a significant event that combined peaceful protest, violent clashes, and high-profile appearances. With 26 officers injured, 24 arrests, and large crowds gathered on both sides, the event highlighted the challenges faced by law enforcement during major public demonstrations. While many participants exercised their right to protest, a portion of attendees engaged in violent behavior, putting police and the public at risk.

Counter-protesters demonstrated the public’s continued resistance to racism, fascism, and hate, ensuring that a strong message of unity and safety was also heard. The event serves as a reminder of the importance of managing large gatherings carefully and upholding the law while respecting democratic rights.
