As the counting of votes for the Lok Sabha elections 2024 began on June 4, Prime Minister Narendra Modi surged ahead with a lead of 49,859 votes over Congress candidate Ajay Rai in the Varanasi Lok Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh. This initial lead showcased the early momentum for the BJP in one of the crucial constituencies.

In other key developments, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi showed promising leads in both Kerala's Wayanad and Uttar Pradesh's Rae Bareli Lok Sabha seats. These leads underscored the competitive spirit of the electoral battle, with Gandhi asserting his presence across different regions.

The electoral landscape in Uttar Pradesh witnessed a tight contest, particularly between the Samajwadi Party (SP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The initial trends suggested a neck-and-neck race, indicative of the fierce political competition in the state. Meanwhile, the Congress party showed strength by leading on 8 seats, positioning itself as a significant player in the electoral fray.

Addressing concerns about the integrity of the counting process, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar emphasized the strict instructions given to ensure complete transparency. These measures aimed to uphold the integrity of the electoral process for both the Lok Sabha elections and the simultaneous Assembly polls in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha.
