In Guixi city, eastern China, an elementary school became the site of a knife attack on Monday afternoon, leaving five individuals injured, according to local authorities and reports from New Delhi. This incident marks the second such attack in China this month. The injured victims have been promptly admitted to the hospital and are currently receiving medical treatment, as confirmed by the provincial public security authority cited by the state-run Xinhua news agency.
Knife attacks have unfortunately become a recurring occurrence in China, with this recent incident adding to a concerning trend. Authorities attribute these attacks to individuals who may be experiencing discontent or struggling with mental instability. Just earlier this month, on May 7, a tragic mass stabbing unfolded at a hospital in Yunnan province, resulting in two fatalities and 21 injuries.

Given the strict prohibition of private gun ownership for most civilians in China, the country has seen an increase in mass knife attacks in public spaces over the years. Last August, a mentally ill individual unleashed a knife attack in a residential area of Yunnan, claiming two lives and injuring seven others. Similarly, in July of the same year, a horrific stabbing incident occurred at a kindergarten in Guangdong province, resulting in the deaths of six individuals, including three children.
These incidents highlight the urgent need for heightened vigilance and preventive measures to address the root causes of such attacks and ensure the safety and security of the public, particularly in vulnerable settings like schools and hospitals.
