The re-election of Donald Trump as President of the United States left many Americans grappling with intense emotions—and late-night host Jimmy Kimmel was no exception. Known for his quick wit and humor, Kimmel showed a more vulnerable side on his show the night after Trump’s victory was confirmed.

Kimmel, typically the voice of levity, struggled to hold back tears as he addressed his audience. "Let’s be honest, it was a terrible night last night," he began, his voice shaky. He paused, visibly emotional, before going on: "It was a terrible night for women, for children, for the hundreds of thousands of hardworking immigrants who make this country great." The studio audience responded with supportive applause, attempting to lift Kimmel’s spirits as he choked back tears.
Kimmel, usually at ease with his comedic monologues, seemed shaken as he went on. “I’ve tried to find the humor in all of this, but to be honest, there’s not much to laugh about right now.” His face betrayed a sense of despair, reflecting his disappointment and frustration with the election outcome.
The emotional monologue continued as Kimmel voiced his fears for the future under Trump’s continued leadership. “This was a terrible night for healthcare, for our climate, for science, for journalism, for justice, for free speech,” he continued, his voice thick with emotion. He highlighted the groups he felt would be most impacted, including the poor, the middle class, and senior citizens who depend on Social Security. He pointed to the threats he saw to America's allies, particularly Ukraine, as well as to institutions like NATO, democracy, and decency. With each phrase, Kimmel's sorrow and frustration were palpable.
In a rare, vulnerable moment, Kimmel even addressed Trump’s supporters directly. “For everyone who voted against him, it was obviously a terrible night. But guess what? It was a bad night for anyone who voted for him, too—you just don’t realize it yet.” His audience responded with more applause, backing Kimmel’s passionate remarks as he voiced concerns that many viewers likely shared.
Finally, as the tension in the studio reached a peak, Kimmel managed to find a moment of humor. He paused, glancing at his audience with a faint smile before delivering a punchline: “And most of all, it was an absolute disaster of a night for Melania,” he quipped, prompting laughter from the audience. The brief moment of levity lightened the atmosphere, a reminder of Kimmel’s unique ability to bring humor even in dark times.
Kimmel then wrapped up his monologue by offering a sliver of hope in the situation. “Maybe in the long run, we’ll realize this is what we needed to finally wake up. Maybe the people who care so much about him will see how little he cares about them,” he said. With a hint of optimism, he added, “The one silver lining? At least he can’t run again in 2028.”
Elsewhere on late-night television, Stephen Colbert also addressed the election. Known for his incisive political commentary, Colbert was quick to shoot down the frequent assumption that Trump’s presidency is a goldmine for comedy. “As a late-night host, people say, ‘C’mon, you must love this; he gives you so much material,’” Colbert began, a wry smile on his face. “Well, no.” He paused before delivering a striking comparison: “That’s like telling the guy who cleans the bathrooms, ‘You must love it when someone has explosive diarrhea because you have so much to clean up.’”
The audience erupted in laughter, finding humor in Colbert’s blunt analogy. He concluded his segment with a fitting remark on Trump’s second term, remarking, “The first time Donald Trump was elected, he started off as a joke and ended up as a tragedy. This time, he’s starting off as a tragedy. Who knows how he’ll end up… maybe as a limerick? ‘There once was a man who was orange…’” he trailed off, throwing up his hands in mock frustration, sending the audience into fits of laughter once more.
