New Delhi: A weather station at Dayrestan Airport in a village off the southern coast of Iran recorded a potentially record-breaking heat index of 82.2°C on August 28. If verified, this heat index, accompanied by a dew point of 36.1°C, could be among the highest ever documented globally.
The National Weather Service's METAR Global readings show that on August 28 at 10:30 am, the temperature at Dayrestan Airport was 38.8°C. This temperature alone might not be extraordinary, but when combined with a relative humidity of 85%, it results in a heat index of 82.2°C, which reflects the "feels like" temperature.
In arid regions like Iran, where high temperatures are common, the humidity is typically lower, which often makes the heat more bearable. However, when high temperatures are accompanied by high humidity, the body struggles to cool itself effectively. Sweat cannot evaporate as quickly, leading to a higher "feels like" temperature and increased risk of heat-related illnesses.

Prolonged exposure to a heat index between 40-54°C can lead to heatstroke, a serious condition that requires immediate medical attention.
The dew point, which in this case is 36.1°C, indicates the temperature at which the air becomes saturated with water vapor and cannot hold any more moisture. High dew points contribute to the oppressive nature of heatwaves, as they signify a high level of humidity in the air.
The heatwave impacting West Asia has been severe, with temperatures in the region recently climbing to 50°C. The intense heat has prompted authorities to limit operating hours at various facilities and mandate closures of government and commercial institutions to conserve energy. Hospitals have been overwhelmed with cases of heatstroke.
The August 28 heat index serves as a stark reminder of the escalating climate challenges faced by the Global South. Experts predict that heatwaves will become more frequent and severe due to climate change. Friederike Otto, Senior Lecturer in Climate Science at the Grantham Institute, Imperial College London, highlighted this concern in an interview, noting that "summers are becoming much hotter, increasing the risk of heatwaves, fires, and droughts, while winters are becoming wetter, heightening the risk of severe flooding."
This incident underscores the urgent need for global action to address climate change and mitigate its increasingly extreme impacts.
