Suryakumar Yadav, having completed his recovery from injury, rejoined the Mumbai Indians (MI) squad ahead of their upcoming clash against Delhi Capitals (DC) in the ongoing IPL 2024 season. The talented batsman had been sidelined since the South Africa tour due to an ankle injury, followed by a sports hernia infection, forcing him to miss the initial matches of the season. After diligent rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA), Suryakumar received clearance on April 3 to participate in the IPL 2024 season. Both the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the NCA physios ensured his full fitness before granting approval, underscoring their cautious approach. MI had been building anticipation for his return on social media platforms and confirmed his reunion with the squad on April 5.
During Suryakumar's absence, MI faced challenges, failing to secure victories in their initial three matches of the IPL 2024 campaign. Currently on a break in Jamnagar, the team is gearing up for their upcoming fixture at the Wankhede Stadium on April 7. Suryakumar's significance to MI's lineup was evident in the previous season, where his stellar performance contributed significantly to the team's journey to the playoffs. With 603 runs in 16 matches at an impressive average of 43.21 and a strike rate of 181.14, he emerged as a vital asset.
His absence was palpable in MI's initial matches, particularly in their struggles to chase down targets against Gujarat Titans (GT) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). Additionally, their batting lineup faltered in the match against Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the latest IPL 2024 encounter. Suryakumar's return, therefore, holds paramount importance for MI as they seek to rejuvenate their campaign, especially during the upcoming home fixtures.
