International football fans were surprised this week as Inter Milan’s Iranian forward Mehdi Taremi, 32, was unable to leave Tehran—effectively ruled out of the FIFA Club World Cup—due to the sudden closure of Iranian airspace amid rising Israel–Iran hostilities.
Taremi, who returned to Iran to play in a crucial 2026 World Cup qualifier—in which he scored in a 3–0 victory over North Korea—had planned to fly from Tehran to Los Angeles for Inter’s Club World Cup campaign. Instead, Iran’s government imposed a hard closure of its airspace early last Friday, citing national security concerns amid intense military exchanges with Israel.
With all commercial flights grounded and internal travel deemed unsafe, Inter sources confirmed that Taremi remains in a secure location in Tehran. Efforts by the club to secure an exit route—whether by air or land—have so far failed. Official confirmation from the club indicates that Taremi will miss both the opening match against Monterrey in Pasadena and any subsequent encounters in Los Angeles or Seattle.

Taremi joined Inter last summer from Porto, making 43 appearances in the 2024–25 season, contributing three goals across competition lines. His inclusion in the squad for this tournament was seen as vital depth behind strikers Lautaro Martínez and Marcus Thuram.
His absence could force head coach Cristian Chivu to rely heavily on second-choice forward Sebastiano Esposito, as options remain thin in the attacking pipeline.
The Club World Cup—held between June 14–July 13 in the United States—features top clubs, including Monterrey, River Plate, and Urawa Red Diamonds. Inter’s group-phase opener is scheduled in Pasadena, with subsequent matches in Seattle. The tournament holds global appeal, aimed at crowning an unofficial world club champion.
While sports administrators work to ensure logistics and team preparation proceed amid geopolitical unpredictability, Taremi’s case highlights how conflicts can directly impact player availability and team strategies—even in elite football competitions.
