A serious incident took place at Ahmedabad airport on 23rd July 2025 when an IndiGo flight going to Diu had to stop its takeoff because one of its engines caught fire. There were 60 passengers on board. The pilots acted quickly to keep everyone safe.

What Happened During The Takeoff?

The flight number was 6E 7966. It was an ATR76 aircraft, which is a small plane used for short distances. The flight was scheduled to leave from Ahmedabad airport at 11 am. As the aircraft started to move on the runway to take off, the pilots noticed something unusual.

They saw that one of the engines was showing signs of fire. This is called an “engine fire”. It is a dangerous situation because the engine gives power to the aircraft. If the engine fails, the flight cannot continue.

Pilot Sent Mayday Call To Air Traffic Control

When the pilots noticed the problem, they immediately sent a “Mayday” call to the Air Traffic Control (ATC). A Mayday call is an emergency signal used by pilots when they need urgent help. It informs the ATC that the flight is in danger and needs quick support.

Passengers Evacuated Safely

As soon as the engine fire was noticed, the pilots decided to abort the takeoff. This means they stopped the aircraft from flying. They safely slowed down the aircraft and returned it to the parking bay. All the passengers were evacuated quickly without any injuries.

A video grab from ANI showed the passengers being moved out of the aircraft after the fire was spotted. The airline staff and airport fire teams were also seen near the aircraft to handle the situation.

IndiGo’s Official Statement On The Incident

IndiGo released a statement saying, “A technical snag indication was noticed just before takeoff on IndiGo flight 6E 7966 operating from Ahmedabad to Diu on 23 July 2025. Following the standard operating procedure, the pilots informed the authorities and returned the aircraft to the bay. The aircraft will undergo necessary checks and maintenance before resuming operations.”

What Is A Technical Snag?

A technical snag means there is a problem in the aircraft’s systems or parts. It could be minor or major. In this case, it was related to the engine, which is a very important part of any aircraft.

The spokesperson of IndiGo said that the pilots informed the authorities immediately after discovering the technical snag. The airline also said that they regret the inconvenience caused to their customers and are making all efforts to minimize it by offering refreshments, accommodation in the next available flight, or a full refund against cancellation, as per the passengers’ preference.

How Did The Passengers React?

Some passengers were scared after knowing that there was an engine fire. But they also felt thankful to the pilots for stopping the takeoff and saving their lives. One passenger said that they saw smoke coming out from the engine and felt worried but the cabin crew and pilots kept them calm and guided them to evacuate safely.

Why Are Engine Fires Dangerous?

Engine fires can be very dangerous because:

  • They can damage important parts of the aircraft.

  • They can spread to other parts of the plane.

  • They can cause accidents if not controlled on time.

That is why pilots and airlines are trained to act immediately if they see any sign of engine fire. In this incident too, the pilots showed great alertness and followed the safety rules properly.

Recent Incidents With IndiGo Flights

This incident comes just after another IndiGo flight from Goa to Indore faced a technical snag before landing. That aircraft also landed safely at its destination and IndiGo said that it will undergo a thorough technical inspection before flying again.

IndiGo is India’s largest airline and operates hundreds of flights daily. Sometimes, technical problems can happen in any aircraft. What matters most is how the airline and pilots handle the problem. In both these recent incidents, the pilots followed all safety measures to keep passengers safe.

What Happens After Such Incidents?

When an aircraft faces a technical snag or engine fire, the following steps are taken:

  1. Pilots inform ATC – The pilots inform the air traffic control about the problem.

  2. Flight is stopped or landed – Depending on whether the flight is in air or on ground, the pilots either abort takeoff or land the aircraft immediately.

  3. Passengers are evacuated – Passengers are safely moved out of the aircraft.

  4. Aircraft is inspected – Engineers check the aircraft to find out the exact problem.

  5. Maintenance is done – The faulty part is repaired or replaced.

  6. Aircraft resumes operations – After full maintenance, the aircraft can fly again.

What Did The Airline Offer To The Passengers?

IndiGo announced that they will take care of all passengers who faced this inconvenience. The airline said it is offering:

  • Refreshments at the airport

  • Accommodation in the next available flight

  • Full refund if any passenger wants to cancel their ticket

This ensures that passengers do not face too much trouble because of the technical snag.

Why Are Safety Checks Important Before Takeoff?

Before every takeoff, pilots and ground staff perform detailed checks to make sure everything is working properly. But sometimes, even after checks, technical snags can appear at the last moment. This is why pilots are always alert during takeoff and landing – the two most important stages of any flight.

The incident of IndiGo flight 6E 7966 from Ahmedabad to Diu shows how important it is for pilots to be trained and ready for any emergency. Because of the quick action by the pilots, all 60 passengers on board were safe. The airline has said that the aircraft will be thoroughly checked and repaired before it flies again.

Passengers also thanked the crew for keeping them calm and ensuring their safety. Aviation experts say that such incidents remind us that safety always comes first in aviation. Even if it causes delay or inconvenience, it is always better to stay safe than take any risk in the air.
