India Halts Russian Oil Purchases, Trump Confirms Shift

In a major geopolitical update, US President Donald Trump reiterated on Friday that India has effectively stopped buying oil from Russia, signaling a shift in New Delhi’s energy and foreign policy stance. Speaking during a bilateral lunch with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Trump highlighted that India has already “de-escalated” its oil imports from Moscow and is “more or less stopped” in its purchases.

Trump emphasized that India had previously purchased about 38 percent of its oil from Russia, but these imports are now being phased out. “They are pulling back. They have bought about 38 percent of the oil, and they won’t be doing it anymore,” Trump said. This development marks a significant moment in India-Russia relations and the broader global energy landscape, as India had been a major buyer of Russian crude amid Western sanctions on Moscow.

Experts suggest that India’s decision to halt oil purchases from Russia could have multiple implications. The move affects global oil markets, as Russian crude supplies are redirected, and it reflects India’s careful balancing act between economic interests and geopolitical considerations. President Trump’s comments also underline the US’s ongoing scrutiny of energy transactions linked to Russia, especially in the context of the conflict in Ukraine.

India’s oil policy has increasingly attracted international attention, as New Delhi seeks energy security while managing relations with major powers. By halting oil purchases from Russia, India aligns more closely with Western expectations, particularly the United States, without overtly straining ties with Moscow. Trump’s statement reinforces that Washington is closely monitoring India’s energy decisions and welcomes the country’s “de-escalation” in Russian oil trade.

The impact of India halting oil purchases from Russia will also be felt domestically. Analysts point out that the decision may affect fuel prices, supply chain logistics, and refinery operations in India. However, New Delhi’s energy planners are reportedly exploring alternative sources to ensure that India’s growing demand for crude oil is met, even as Russian imports decline.

This latest statement from President Trump confirms that India’s strategic shift away from Russian oil is not temporary but part of a larger recalibration of energy and foreign policy priorities. India’s move to stop buying oil from Russia underscores its role in global geopolitics, as nations increasingly weigh economic benefits against diplomatic pressures and international expectations.
