Dubai, UAE – In a significant step toward strengthening educational cooperation between India and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Ahmedabad, will officially open its Dubai campus this Thursday. The inauguration ceremony will be led jointly by India’s Education Minister, Dharmendra Pradhan, and his Emirati counterpart, Dr. Abdulrahman Al Awar.
This event marks an important milestone in India-UAE relations, particularly in the field of education. Minister Pradhan is on a two-day official visit to the UAE, which is aimed at enhancing bilateral collaboration in education, promoting academic excellence, encouraging innovations, and exploring new opportunities for partnerships between institutions from both countries, according to an official statement from the Indian government.

Growing Educational Collaboration
India and the UAE have been steadily increasing their educational ties over the past few years. In 2023, IIT Delhi opened its Abu Dhabi campus, inaugurated by the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The same year also saw the launch of Symbiosis International University’s Dubai campus.
Earlier, in February 2024, during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the UAE, the CBSE Regional Office and Centre of Excellence were inaugurated in Dubai. This office supports more than 100 Indian international schools in the UAE, following CBSE and Kerala Board curricula, serving the needs of the UAE’s Indian diaspora, which numbers around 3.5 million.
The UAE, home to one of the largest Indian communities anywhere in the world, is positioning itself as a global education hub. This increased collaboration is part of the broader Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between India and the UAE, established in 2017, and reinforced by high-level engagements and the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) signed in 2022.
Minister Pradhan’s UAE Visit
During his two-day visit, Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan is scheduled to meet UAE leaders, government ministers, policy makers, academicians, and representatives from Indian and UAE educational institutions.
One of the key highlights of his visit is a meeting with Sara Musallam, Chairperson of the Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK). Minister Pradhan will also visit the IIT Delhi-Abu Dhabi campus, where he will inaugurate the Atal Incubation Centre, the first foreign incubation centre of its kind, and launch the PhD and B.Tech programs at the campus.
Additionally, Minister Pradhan is expected to visit the BAPS Hindu Temple in Abu Dhabi and participate in the first anniversary celebrations of Symbiosis University’s Dubai campus. He will also attend a roundtable conference with Indian higher education institutions in the UAE and meet principals of CBSE-affiliated schools.
The Significance of IIM Ahmedabad Dubai Campus
While the visit will cover multiple events, the opening of the IIM Ahmedabad Dubai campus remains the most notable development. This expansion reflects a growing trend of Indian education institutions establishing campuses abroad, inspired by India’s National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and University Grants Commission (UGC) guidelines. These initiatives aim to strengthen India’s global educational presence, sharing its knowledge and academic expertise with students around the world.
The Dubai campus will offer world-class management education and will serve as a bridge for students seeking global exposure while maintaining strong ties with Indian academia. This move also reinforces India’s commitment to developing future leaders with international perspectives, who can contribute to both domestic and global development.
India’s Global Educational Expansion
IIM Ahmedabad is not the only Indian institution to expand abroad. In Africa, for example, IIT Madras launched its first offshore campus in Zanzibar in 2023, offering programs in data science, artificial intelligence, and related fields. Similarly, the National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU) India-Africa Campus was inaugurated in Jinja, Uganda, in April 2023.
These initiatives highlight India’s growing role in shaping global education. By opening campuses overseas, Indian institutions provide quality education to international students while promoting academic collaboration, research exchange, and innovation. It also allows Indian students and faculty to gain international exposure without leaving the country for higher studies.
UAE as an Education Hub
The UAE’s vision to become an education hub aligns with these developments. With its rapidly growing Indian diaspora and focus on innovation-driven learning, the UAE offers a fertile environment for collaborations in higher education. Over the years, the country has hosted several Indian universities, and the recent initiatives by IIM Ahmedabad, IIT Delhi, Symbiosis University, and others indicate a strategic partnership aimed at mutual academic growth.
The UAE has made consistent efforts to attract top-tier educational institutions and support centers of excellence. These efforts not only serve its resident community but also enhance the country’s reputation as a destination for high-quality international education.
