A sudden and dramatic retreat of one of Antarctica’s glaciers has left scientists searching for answers. In late 2022, the Hektoria Glacier in the Antarctic Peninsula pulled back more than eight kilometres in just two months — an extraordinary shift never seen before in this region.
For decades, Hektoria had been slowly changing after the 2002 collapse of the Larsen B ice shelf, which had acted as a natural barrier, holding it in place. When that ice shelf vanished, the glacier began to flow faster and thin. Later, sea-ice that formed in the open bay helped stabilise it again — until early 2022, when that sea-ice suddenly broke apart.
What followed was a chain reaction. Vast slabs of ice began to fracture and drift away as massive, flat-topped icebergs. Satellite images captured the glacier’s front collapsing and retreating deep into the bay at a speed that surprised even long-time observers.
Researchers believe the event might mark the first modern instance of a rare process — where a glacier resting lightly on the seabed suddenly becomes buoyant and detaches almost all at once. The result: a rapid backward slide unlike any previously documented for grounded Antarctic glaciers.
The key lies in what scientists call an “ice plain” — a relatively flat stretch of seabed beneath the glacier. As the ice thinned, ocean water pressure may have helped lift it from below, triggering a swift and massive retreat.
While the debate continues over whether this section of Hektoria was truly resting on the seabed or already floating, the event highlights how fragile Antarctica’s coastal glaciers have become. Even small shifts in temperature or ocean conditions can unleash major transformations across the ice landscape.
Hektoria’s story, unfolding in one of the coldest corners of the planet, is another striking reminder that the frozen continent is changing faster than anyone expected. The mystery of what exactly triggered the retreat may not yet be solved — but the message it sends about the speed of change in Earth’s polar regions is loud and clear.
