Heart failure is often misunderstood. Many people imagine sudden chest pain or dramatic collapses, as seen in movies, but the reality is very different. Heart failure usually develops quietly and may show subtle signs that are easy to miss. Early recognition of these signs can save lives, as timely care can prevent the condition from becoming severe.

Dr Dmitry Yaranov, a cardiologist and heart transplant surgeon who specialises in advanced heart failure, heart transplantation, and mechanical circulatory support, has shared five unexpected warning signs of heart failure. In an Instagram post shared on November 20, Dr Yaranov highlighted that most people think they would notice heart failure right away, but the earliest symptoms are often quiet and easily blamed on stress, age, or simply feeling tired.

One warning sign that many overlook is a persistent cough that worsens when lying down. Dr Yaranov explains that fluid buildup in the lungs can trigger this symptom, especially when the body is horizontal. Other subtle signs can also appear before more obvious symptoms like swelling or shortness of breath.

Sudden weight changes are another sign of heart strain. Rapid increases in weight over a few days may indicate fluid retention caused by the heart not pumping efficiently. Unexplained nausea or loss of appetite can also signal heart problems, as reduced blood flow affects the digestive system.

Cognitive changes, such as new difficulties with focus or memory, are often overlooked but can indicate that the heart is not supplying enough oxygen to the brain. Similarly, restless or poor-quality sleep can be linked to heart issues, as the body struggles to maintain balance while at rest.

Dr Yaranov emphasises that recognising these subtle signs early is crucial. People should not dismiss minor changes in their health as normal aging or stress. Regular check-ups with a trusted cardiologist can help detect heart problems before they escalate.

Heart failure is treatable, especially when caught early. Lifestyle adjustments, medications, and monitoring can improve outcomes and quality of life. By being aware of early warning signs, such as coughing while lying down, sudden weight gain, nausea, poor concentration, and restless nights, individuals can take proactive steps to protect their heart health.

While the dramatic images of heart failure seen in movies grab attention, the real danger lies in the quiet, unnoticed changes in the body. Dr Yaranov’s advice serves as a reminder that listening to your body and seeking professional care promptly can make all the difference.
