Handelsbanken's Q3 Profit Declines Less Than Anticipated

In a surprising twist, Sweden's Handelsbanken has reported a third-quarter net profit drop that was less severe than investors had anticipated, propped up by loan loss reversals and steady interest income.

The venerable financial institution, with a legacy spanning over 150 years, recorded a net profit of 5.95 billion Swedish crowns for Q3, down from 7.21 billion the previous year. Analysts were predicting a sharper decrease, forecasting around 5.79 billion, making these results a reassuring sign amid economic strain.

Ongoing cost reductions, a key concern for investors, continued to trend downward. Handelsbanken announced a 4% decrease compared to last year and a 5% reduction from the second quarter, reflecting its commitment to efficiency and stringent expense oversight.

Handelsbanken is the first among major banks in Stockholm to unveil its Q3 findings. While Nordea, based in Finland, also reported significant earnings last week, buoyed by increasing lending and deposit activity in Sweden.
