Hinduja Group Chairman Gopichand Hinduja Passes Away at 85

London: Gopichand P Hinduja, the chairman of the multinational Hinduja Group and one of the most influential figures in global business, passed away in London at the age of 85.

Fondly known as ‘GP’ in business circles, Gopichand was the second of the four Hinduja brothers who built one of the world’s largest family-run conglomerates. His elder brother, Srichand Hinduja, died in 2023, while Prakash and Ashok Hinduja continue to lead various divisions of the family empire.

Gopichand Hinduja joined the family business in 1950, transforming it from a small Indo-Middle East trading firm into a diversified global powerhouse with operations across 11 key sectors, including automotive, banking and finance, IT, healthcare, energy, real estate, and media.

A graduate of Jai Hind College, Mumbai, Gopichand was also conferred honorary doctorates by the University of Westminster and Richmond College for his contributions to global business and philanthropy.

Under his leadership, the Hinduja Group became synonymous with Indian entrepreneurship on the global stage, with major companies like Ashok Leyland, IndusInd Bank, and NXTDIGITAL Limited under its umbrella.

Earlier this year, the Sunday Times Rich List 2025 named the Hinduja family as the richest in the UK, with a net worth estimated at £32.3 billion.

Despite the family’s massive success, the Hindujas faced a highly publicized legal dispute in 2021, when internal disagreements over inheritance and control surfaced in a London court. Gopichand, along with his brothers Prakash and Ashok, cited a 2013 family agreement declaring that “everything belongs to everyone and nothing belongs to anyone,” reflecting the unity that once defined their empire.

Gopichand Hinduja’s passing marks the end of an era for one of the most powerful business dynasties in the world. He will be remembered for his visionary leadership, deep cultural values, and role in putting Indian enterprise on the global map.
