FBI Fires More Agents Linked to Trump Election Probe Amid Internal Chaos

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has intensified its internal shake-up, removing additional agents and supervisors connected to the investigation of former President Donald Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election.

The latest terminations occurred despite efforts by senior federal prosecutors to halt at least some of the firings. Sources indicate that agents were initially notified of their dismissal earlier this week, only for the process to be paused temporarily following concerns raised by the D.C. U.S. Attorney. The firings resumed shortly after, though the reasons for the sudden reversals remain unclear. The total number of agents affected has not been disclosed.

This purge is part of a wider reorganization led by FBI Director Kash Patel, who has removed numerous senior officials and agents involved in investigations or actions perceived as critical of the Trump administration. In September, three high-ranking former FBI officials filed a lawsuit against Patel, alleging political interference and a “campaign of retribution.”

The FBI Agents Association criticized the ongoing dismissals, calling them "chaotic and arbitrary," and emphasizing that agents conducting lawful investigations should not face termination. The association highlighted the repeated firing, reinstatement, and re-firing of agents as evidence of internal disorder under current leadership.

The personnel changes come amid heightened scrutiny of the 2020 election investigation, which eventually led to special counsel Jack Smith indicting Trump. Republican lawmakers have increasingly questioned whether the Justice Department has been politicized against conservatives, releasing documents from the FBI that include analyses of phone records from several GOP lawmakers.

Beyond the election probe, the FBI has also removed agents and senior officials for various reasons, including previous resistance to political pressure, participation in protests, or public scrutiny of bureau actions. These terminations contribute to growing unease within the agency, affecting morale and internal stability.

FBI Director Patel and D.C. U.S. Attorney spokespersons have not provided comment on the recent firings. Observers say the ongoing shake-ups could have long-term implications for the bureau’s operations, credibility, and internal cohesion.
