Elon Musk has provided insights into the workings of the algorithm behind X, shedding light on why users often see specific types of content in their feeds. In a post made on Monday, Musk explained that the X algorithm operates on a straightforward principle: content that users engage with, such as likes, comments, and shares, is more likely to appear in their feed.

Musk elaborated that one of the most influential signals for the algorithm is the act of sharing content. He noted, “One of the strongest signals is if you forward X posts to friends; it assumes you like that content a lot because it takes effort to forward.” This means that when users share posts, the algorithm interprets this as a strong endorsement, leading to more similar content being shown to them.
However, Musk acknowledged a significant limitation of the current algorithm. He pointed out that it does not differentiate between positive and negative motivations behind user interactions. “Unfortunately, if the actual reason you forwarded the content to friends was because you were outraged by it, we are currently not smart enough to realize that,” he admitted.
In a subsequent post, Musk expressed his support for “freedom of speech,” stating, “I like content that supports freedom of speech,” and adding, “Long live X. Long live freedom of speech.” He further escalated his rhetoric by declaring, “I’ll cage fight the dictator in Brazil if I have to,” targeting Brazil's Chief Justice Alexandre de Moraes, whom Musk has previously criticized as a “tyrant” and “dictator.”
The conflict between Musk and de Moraes began in April when Musk announced his intention to unsuspend accounts related to the 2023 attack on the Brazilian Congress, despite a court order to keep them blocked. In response, de Moraes launched an investigation into Musk, accusing him of spreading misinformation, obstructing justice, and inciting criminal behavior. The Brazilian justice system also imposed restrictions, including blocking X’s access in Brazil, threatening fines for users bypassing the ban with VPNs, and freezing the finances of Musk’s company, Starlink, in the country.
Musk has fiercely criticized de Moraes, using X as a platform to denounce the judge’s actions and accuse him of undermining democratic principles.
